Obverse description Central field displays the crowned armorial shield of John of Hornes, Prince-Bishop of Liège, bearing three chalices (the arms of the Hornes family) arranged two above one, surmounted by a bishop's mitre or crown. The shield is rendered in the late Gothic heraldic style typical of the period. A beaded inner circle frames the central device, with a Gothic uncial legend running along the outer border. The overall composition reflects the ecclesiastical and feudal authority of the issuing prince-bishop.
