John of Hornes served as Prince-Bishop of Liège from 1484 until his death in 1505, presiding over a diocese perpetually caught between Burgundian and later Habsburg pressure. This particular issue dates to 1494, the same year Charles VIII of France marched through the region en route to his Italian campaign — a military passage that destabilized Liège's already fractious relationship with its neighbors and put sustained pressure on the diocese's finances.
Billon coinage of this type circulated alongside a chaotic mix of foreign imitations and debased issues common to the Low Countries in the 1490s. The Dengis attribution at #797 remains the standard reference for distinguishing this variety from closely related types struck under the same bishop.
