William II of Jülich struck these small sterlings in deliberate imitation of the Brabant sterling — hence the type name — at a moment when the Rhine corridor was saturated with competing petty coinages from a dozen overlapping jurisdictions. The Brabantinus design carried trade credibility that Jülich's own types simply didn't command, making the imitation a practical monetary decision rather than mere flattery.
Noss 51b distinguishes this variety within a closely related group; the die classification turns on small details that are easily missed without direct comparison to the Noss plates.
