Abhimanyu, the last ruler of the Utpala dynasty, reigned during the dynasty's terminal collapse — a period marked by famine, court intrigue, and the progressive disintegration of central authority in the Kashmir valley. The Utpalas had controlled Kashmir since the mid-9th century, but by Abhimanyu's reign the line was effectively exhausted. Within years of this issue, the Lohara dynasty would supplant them entirely.
Kashmir copper staters of this late Utpala phase were struck in large quantities to serve local temple economies, and survival rates are accordingly uneven — many show heavy oxidation from soil burial near religious sites.
