Obverse description Forepart of a griffin facing left, rendered in archaic style, with open beak, prominent ear, and dotted knob atop the head. The creature's powerful forelimbs and muscular chest are visible in high relief against the flat field. The inscription ΤΙΟΣ appears in archaic Greek letters to the right of the griffin's head, identifying the issuing city of Teos. The design is characteristic of early Ionian coinage, executed with bold, vigorous relief typical of the late 7th to mid-6th century BC hammered technique.
