Obverse description Right-facing draped bust of Robert Schuman, French statesman and founding father of European unity, occupying the majority of the field in high relief. The legend ROBERT SCHUMAN arcs along the upper periphery, while the dates • 1886 - 1963 • appear along the lower rim, flanked by decorative dots. The engraver's signature H. KÖTT is visible in the lower right field near the truncation.

Reverse description A large, ornate heraldic coat of arms occupying the central field, surmounted by a visored tournament helmet with elaborate acanthus mantling and a fleur-de-lis crest, the shield quartered with fleurs-de-lis and lions passant in the style of Burgundian medieval heraldry. The date 1971 appears at the base of the central device, with the mint mark and fineness designation (a) 900 directly below. A continuous trilingual legend surrounds the entire design reading clockwise from the top: CENTRE EUROPEEN D'ETUDES BURGONDO-MEDIANES / PREMIER ECU d'EUROPE / ERSTER EUROPA TALER.
