Frederik VI died on 3 January 1848 after a reign of nearly forty years, and Frederik VII acceded the same day to a throne already under enormous pressure. Within weeks, the March Revolution in Copenhagen forced the new king to accept a constitutional government, effectively ending absolute monarchy in Denmark. This coin was struck to mark both the death and the accession simultaneously — an unusual pairing that reflects how rapidly events moved that winter.
1848 also saw the outbreak of the First Schleswig War, making this one of the more historically loaded commemorative issues in the Danish series.
