Christian V ascended to the Danish throne in 1670, the same year this coin was struck, inheriting an absolute monarchy that his father Frederik III had formally consolidated just a decade earlier through the 1660 coup against the nobility. The Christiania Mint — operating in what is now Oslo — served the Norwegian realm specifically, distinguishing its output from the Copenhagen issues that served Denmark proper.
