Additional information

Christian V ascended to the Danish throne in 1670, the same year this coin was struck, inheriting an absolute monarchy that his father Frederik III had formally consolidated just a decade earlier through the 1660 coup against the nobility. The Christiania Mint — operating in what is now Oslo — served the Norwegian realm specifically, distinguishing its output from the Copenhagen issues that served Denmark proper. Type II designations within the Christiania speciedaler series reflect die adjustments made as the mint settled into production under the new reign.

The divided-date variant, with the year split across the shield, is the detail that separates this piece from otherwise near-identical dies — a distinction Hede and AAJT both catalog separately for good reason.
