Christian V inherited a Norway still absorbing the consequences of the 1660 absolute monarchy coup, and the speciedaler coinage of his reign was tied directly to that centralizing project — revenue extraction from Norwegian silver mines at Kongsberg funded both the crown's ambitions and its wars.
