Christian V's speciedaler coinage for Norway was struck at the Kongsberg mint, which had only been operational since 1686 — meaning this 1687 piece comes from the facility's first full year of production. Kongsberg's silver supply came directly from the Numedal mines, one of the richest silver deposits in northern Europe at the time, and the Danish-Norwegian crown had reorganized the entire minting operation specifically to monetize that output more efficiently.
Early Kongsberg strikes are frequently uneven in die alignment and planchet preparation, a predictable consequence of a newly established operation still calibrating its equipment and workforce.
