Christian IV struck these specie dalers during a period of aggressive Danish commercial expansion, when Copenhagen was being rebuilt as a showcase capital and the king was personally overseeing architectural projects, naval construction, and monetary reform simultaneously. The specie daler — distinct from the rigsdaler of account — was designed for large-denomination trade, particularly with Hamburg and the Baltic merchant networks that Denmark was actively trying to dominate.
The rectangular shield arms variant documented under Dav EC II#3514A reflects an intermediate heraldic arrangement used briefly before Christian's heralds standardized the royal achievement. These transitional armorial configurations are frequently conflated in older auction literature, making correct attribution to the 3514A type worth confirming against die axis.
