Christian IV's reign ended badly. By 1646 he had lost Jämtland, Härjedalen, Gotland, and Ösel to Sweden in the Peace of Brömsebro the previous year — territorial concessions that marked Denmark's definitive decline as the dominant Scandinavian power. The speciedaler coinage of these final years was produced under genuine fiscal strain, with the crown increasingly dependent on Holstein creditors.
