Franz II was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in July 1792, just weeks after the death of Leopold II and amid mounting revolutionary pressure from France. The Sovrano — a denomination with roots in the Spanish-era coinage of Lombardy — continued under Austrian administration as the primary gold issue of the Milan mint, though the political ground was shifting fast. French forces entered Milan in May 1796, effectively ending regular Austrian minting there.
The 1792–1796 window represents the viable striking period for this type. Post-1796 examples, if dated, would have been struck under exceptional circumstances given French occupation.
