| Obverse description | Bare-headed, youthful effigy of Queen Victoria facing left, after the celebrated 'Young Head' portrait modelled by William Wyon. The hair is elaborately dressed, swept back from the brow in flowing waves and gathered into a coiled chignon at the nape of the neck, with loose strands falling gracefully behind. The truncation of the neck is plain and unadorned. The Latin legend VICTORIA DEI GRATIA arcs around the upper periphery, with the date 1870 positioned in the lower exergual area, all within a finely executed beaded border. |
