| Reverse description | A faithful reinterpretation of William Wyon's celebrated Una and the Lion design, originally created for the 1839 Five Pound gold piece. The central device depicts a crowned female figure, representing Una (symbolizing Queen Victoria and, here, allegorically Elizabeth II), draped in flowing robes and holding a sceptre, walking alongside a large lion whose chain she holds with her left hand. The composition is rendered in high relief against a deeply mirrored field, accentuating the sculptural quality of the design. The Latin motto DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS. arcs around the upper portion of the field, and the denomination SOVEREIGN appears in the lower exergue. A small engraver's mark is visible below the central device. |
