Gibraltar's sovereign program has long operated as a parallel issue to the Royal Mint's own sovereign coinage, exploiting the territory's status as a British Overseas Territory to produce legal tender gold in the same fineness and weight specification as the historic sovereign without competing directly with London's output. The series draws on the Saint George narrative across multiple themed releases, of which this is one installment.
The .9167 fineness is the original crown gold standard established in 1526 under Henry VIII — unchanged across five centuries of sovereign production.
