Gibraltar has issued sovereign-format coins since 1973, operating under a long-standing arrangement that permits the territory to produce its own coinage distinct from UK Royal Mint output. The "1 Sovereign" denomination here is purely nominal — Gibraltar's legal tender sovereign series has never been tied to the gold sovereign's historic bullion value, functioning instead as a commemorative program.
The selective gold plating on this silver issue highlights the St. George motif, a technique that became common in the Gibraltar program during the 2010s to differentiate annual releases within the series.
