Alderney, a Crown Dependency with no formal mint of its own, has issued commemorative coinage under royal licence since the 1990s, contracting production to the Royal Mint and later private minters. This piece marks the 65th anniversary of the 1953 Coronation — the Sapphire Jubilee — an interval with no conventional precedent in British royal history, since no monarch had previously reigned long enough to reach it.
The denomination echoes the sovereign denomination but carries no currency status in the UK proper.
