Additional information

Gibraltar's sovereign issues occupy an odd constitutional niche — struck under Royal Mint licence but issued by a British Overseas Territory, which allows designers and reverse treatments that the Royal Mint itself would not sanction for domestic coinage. The 2018 date falls within the Jody Clark obverse portrait series, introduced in 2015 and the fifth definitive effigy of Elizabeth II used on Commonwealth coinage.

Benedetto Pistrucci's St. George design, original to 1817, has appeared on British sovereigns with only brief interruptions — most notably during the reigns of monarchs who objected to a foreign-born artist's work receiving such prominence.
