The Isle of Man has issued commemorative sovereigns under its own authority since the 1970s, operating entirely outside the Royal Mint's remit — a quirk of the island's Crown Dependency status that allows Pobjoy Mint and others to produce legal tender coinage bearing the British monarch's effigy without Westminster's involvement.
