The Isle of Man has issued sovereigns under its own authority since 1973, a quirk of its status as a Crown Dependency with distinct coinage rights separate from the United Kingdom. These are legal tender on the island but have never functioned as circulation currency — they exist entirely for the collector market, a category the Manx treasury has exploited with unusual frequency.
The Platinum Jubilee marked Elizabeth II's 70th year on the throne, the longest reign in British history. She died three months after this coin was struck.
