Gibraltar sovereigns occupy a peculiar corner of numismatic law: they are legal tender of Gibraltar yet struck to the precise weight and fineness of the British sovereign, a denomination Britain itself has never issued as circulating currency since 1932. The Platinum Jubilee in 2022 marked Elizabeth II's 70th year on the throne — the longest reign in British history and the first time any British monarch reached that milestone. She died in September of that year, making this among the final issues struck in her honor before her death.
