Additional information

Gibraltar's use of the sovereign format is a quirk of British overseas territory coinage — the piece carries legal tender status under Gibraltar law but is treated purely as a bullion or collector instrument. The Platinum Jubilee issue marks Elizabeth II's 70th year on the throne, a reign that began in February 1952 and outlasted fifteen British Prime Ministers. The "1st Portrait" designation refers to the Gillick effigy, first used on Commonwealth coinage in 1953, here revived as a deliberate historical callback rather than the then-current Jody Clark portrait.
