Additional information

Gibraltar's status as a British Overseas Territory gives it the legal authority to issue sovereign-format gold coinage, a quirk that has produced a steady stream of commemorative pieces since the 1970s. This issue marks the centenary of the Armistice of 11 November 1918, signed at 5:12 a.m. in a railway carriage in the Forest of Compiègne — the guns falling silent six hours later at the eleventh hour.

The Royal Mint itself struck commemoratives for the same centenary. Gibraltar's parallel issue exists entirely in the collector market.
