The Isle of Man has issued gold sovereigns under royal licence since 1973, making it one of the few territories outside the UK with longstanding authority to produce the denomination. These are legal tender on the island but were always aimed squarely at the bullion and collector market — circulating examples are essentially nonexistent.
The 2021 decimalisation theme commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the UK's switch to decimal currency on February 15, 1971, a date known at the time as "D-Day" in Treasury communications.
