Gibraltar has issued sovereigns intermittently since the 1970s, exploiting the territory's legal authority to produce coinage independent of the Royal Mint while trading on the sovereign format's bullion credibility. The 2018 date marks the 65th anniversary of Elizabeth II's coronation — the Sapphire Jubilee — a milestone the Royal Mint itself declined to commemorate with a sovereign issue, leaving the field open to Crown Dependencies and territories.
