The Isle of Man has issued sovereign-sized gold pieces since the 1970s under a licensing arrangement that allows it to produce legal tender coinage independently of the Royal Mint. These Christmas issues, running annually since 1986, were a deliberate commercial strategy by Pobjoy Mint to capture the bullion gift market — each year's reverse design changed to maintain collector interest and annual sales.
The .916 fineness matches the historic sovereign standard established by the Great Recoinage of 1816.
