The Revestment Act of 1765 ended the so-called "running trade" — the Isle of Man's institutionalized smuggling economy that had made the island a transshipment hub for untaxed goods flowing into Britain. The British Crown purchased the island's feudal rights from the Atholl family for £70,000 and an annuity, bringing Manx customs under Westminster control almost overnight. This 1965 issue marks the bicentenary of that transfer.
The .980 fineness is notably higher than the standard British sovereign specification of .9167, making this a distinctly Manx interpretation of the sovereign form rather than a derivative of Royal Mint output.
