Beschrijving voorzijde Bare-headed effigy of King Charles III facing left, modelled by sculptor Martin Jennings, occupying the central field with naturalistic detail in the hair and facial features. The portrait is uncrowned and rendered in high relief, befitting the piedfort proof format. A circular Latin legend runs continuously around the periphery, separated by raised dots as punctuation. The engraver's initials MJ appear discreetly in the lower right field beneath the truncation of the bust.

Aanvullende informatie

Issued within weeks of Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, this piedfort was struck before Charles III had an effigy formally approved for circulation coinage — making it one of the earliest official British gold issues bearing his name as sovereign. The piedfort format, double the thickness of a standard sovereign blank, has been used by the Royal Mint for collector issues since the 1980s revival of the format.

Elizabeth II's portrait on this piece marks the end of a 70-year run of her effigy across British coinage — the longest of any British monarch.
