The Austrian Netherlands souverain d'or was revived under Maria Theresa as part of a broader fiscal reorganization following the War of the Austrian Succession, during which the southern provinces had been occupied by French forces and their monetary system badly disrupted. Brussels and Antwerp were the primary minting locations, each producing coins whose subtle differences in die workmanship have occupied specialists for generations.
The "large flan" designation distinguishes this striking from the more common narrow-flan production of the same type — a broader planchet at equivalent weight, producing a visually distinct coin that commands consistent premium among collectors of the series.
