The "Bouquet Sou" series circulated in Lower Canada during a period when the colonial government had utterly failed to provide adequate small change, leaving private merchants and banks to fill the void with their own copper tokens. This particular variety — distinguished by its 21 cherry leaves and the absence of shamrocks — is one of numerous die combinations documented within the type, and the differences between varieties were almost certainly invisible to the farmers and labourers spending them daily.
The tokens continued circulating well past Confederation, with some examples known in use into the 1890s despite their unofficial status.
