Obverse description Within a beaded circle, a crowned shield bearing the Oldenburg arms is centrally positioned over a long-armed cross, the arms of which extend outward beyond the beaded border and divide the surrounding legend into four sections. The heraldic shield is surmounted by a royal crown in high relief. The cross arrangement gives the design a bold, architectural quality characteristic of early sixteenth-century Danish hammered coinage. The legend, rendered in uncial lettering, is distributed in the four quadrants formed by the cross arms.
