| Anmerkungen |
Tajikistan's first post-Soviet currency, the Tajik ruble, collapsed under hyperinflation so severe that by the late 1990s the largest circulating denomination was 500 rubles — worth fractions of a US cent. The somoni series introduced in 2000 was named after Ismoil Somoni, the ninth-century Samanid ruler, a deliberate choice by a government trying to anchor national identity in pre-Russian, pre-Soviet history. This 1 Somoni was among the founding denominations of that reform, printed by Giesecke & Devrient in Leipzig ahead of the official introduction date.
The 1999 date reflects the print year, not the circulation date — the somoni did not legally replace the Tajik ruble until October 30, 2000, at a rate of 1 somoni to 1,000 rubles.
