| 正面描述 | Central device features a leopard passant to the left in high relief, its tail arching upward, rendered with fine spotted detailing across the body. Above the animal, two crescent moons flank a large five-pointed star, forming a symbolic composition evoking the Somali flag motif. The legend SOMALIA curves along the lower portion of the field in bold Latin lettering, while the engraver's signature ROMAGNOLI appears in small characters at the bottom. The word PROVA is inscribed in small letters at the left of the field, identifying this piece as a pattern trial. The design is bordered by a continuous beaded inner rim set within the outer milled edge. |

Italian Somaliland was placed under Italian administration as a UN Trust Territory in 1950, and this prova — an official trial strike submitted for ministerial approval — was produced in advance of the circulating series. The Trust arrangement gave Italy a ten-year mandate to prepare Somalia for independence, and establishing a local coinage was among the earliest administrative priorities. The billon composition reflects a deliberate cost calculation for a territory with no established monetary infrastructure of its own.
Provas of this series are institutionally rare. Most were retained by the Istituto Poligrafico dello Stato or destroyed after approval decisions were made.
