Victory Peak — known in Kyrgyz as Pobeda, borrowed directly from the Russian — sits on the Chinese border at 7,439 meters and was named in 1946 to commemorate the Soviet victory in World War II. The Kyrgyz Republic began issuing a circulation commemorative som series in the 2000s to assert a distinct national identity through geography and heritage, and high-altitude landmarks became a recurring subject.
