Üzgön — rendered in Russian script as Uzgen — is one of Central Asia's oldest continuously inhabited cities, a Silk Road waypoint that served as the Karakhanid capital in the eleventh century. The 2008 commemorative som series, of which this is one piece, was issued by the National Bank to mark significant historical sites across Kyrgyzstan as the country pushed cultural institution-building nearly two decades after independence from the Soviet Union.
