The Sulaiman-Too mountain in Osh — the subject of this issue — was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2009, the same year this coin was released. The site had been a place of pilgrimage for over a millennium, with shrines and petroglyphs carved into its rock faces dating back to the 10th century. Kyrgyzstan's commemorative coinage program of this period was partly a deliberate effort to assert cultural identity in the post-Soviet space, where national symbols carried outsized political weight.
