Kyrgyzstan's som coinage has always occupied an awkward monetary position — introduced in 1993 after the country was effectively forced off the Russian ruble zone when Russia began issuing its own successor currency, the som arrived as an emergency measure rather than a planned transition. The "Kurosh" naming on this denomination references the traditional Kyrgyz unit of account used historically in the region, an explicit nod to pre-Soviet economic identity that accompanied monetary reforms in the late 2010s.
KM#90 is among the more recent additions to the circulation series, issued under the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic following a broader 2008–2020 redesign program.
