Frederick I issued this large silver gulden amid the final years of his reign, a period marked by his carefully noncommittal stance on the Reformation — he protected Lutheran preachers without formally breaking with Rome, threading a political needle that kept both Catholic nobles and reformist burghers from open revolt. The coin itself belongs to a monetary tradition of high-denomination silver pieces that were as much instruments of political prestige as they were trade currency.
Galster UU#47 is among the rarer documented varieties of the type. Frederick died in 1533, and the succession crisis that followed — the Count's War — effectively ended any continuity in Danish minting policy for years afterward.
