The cross is flanked on either side by debased pseudo-Latin lettering derived from an imperial Byzantine prototype. The exergue bears the mint mark CONOB, retained from the original Byzantine solidus, indicating the Constantinople mint and confirming the piece's nature as a close imitation. |
