Obverse description Helmeted and cuirassed facing bust of Emperor Anastasius I, depicted in three-quarter view to the right, wearing a plumed helmet adorned with a diadem and elaborate military dress. The emperor holds a spear over his right shoulder and bears a decorated shield on his left arm, the shield ornamented with a horseman motif. The bust is rendered in the formal, hieratic Byzantine imperial style characteristic of late antique coinage. The obverse legend D N ANASTA - SIVS PF AVC (Dominus Noster Anastasius Perpetuus Felix Augustus) runs along the outer border in Latin capitals.
