| Reverse description | The reverse is enclosed within a beaded outer border. An elaborate baroque cartouche of bold acanthus and scroll ornaments frames the central field, within which the denomination and date are presented on three lines: the numeral 1 at the top, SOLDO in the centre, and the date 1768 at the base. The lettering is rendered in a period-style serif font consistent with eighteenth-century Corsican coinage design. |

Pasquale Paoli's Corsican Republic lasted only fourteen years before France purchased the island from Genoa in 1768 — the same year this coin was struck — and sent troops to crush the independence movement. Paoli fled to Britain, where he became a celebrated figure in Enlightenment circles, feted by Boswell and Johnson. The republic's coinage was produced at Murato under genuinely difficult circumstances, with limited metalworking infrastructure and no established mint tradition.
The silver-plated steel composition reflects those constraints directly.
