Reverse description The reverse displays a globe or armillary sphere rendered in a schematic grid pattern of horizontal and diagonal lines, representing the Portuguese sphere of influence and maritime dominion. A diagonal band or sash crosses the globe from lower left to upper right, a device associated with the Portuguese royal arms and colonial iconography. The design is contained within a beaded border, with no legend present. The strike is irregular and the surface shows the characteristic porosity of calin (tin-lead alloy) hammered coinage. This armillary sphere motif was a dynastic emblem of King Manuel I and continued in use under João III on colonial issues.
