| Obverse description | Central field dominated by a plain Greek cross with wide, flat arms dividing the flan into four equal quadrants. The cross is boldly struck and slightly off-centre, consistent with hammered coinage of the period. A circular legend in Latin characters runs around the periphery within a beaded border, reading +IOA:III:POR:ET:AL., referencing João III, King of Portugal and the Algarves. The overall style reflects the crude but functional die-work characteristic of Portuguese colonial coinage struck at Malacca for local circulation. |
