Ludovico II ruled Saluzzo through a period of sustained pressure from both Savoy and France, the marquisate functioning as a buffer state that both powers periodically occupied or coerced. His coinage reflects this precarious autonomy — small silver issues struck in limited quantity to assert local authority that was, in practice, frequently contested. The soldino denomination itself was a workhorse of northern Italian small commerce, and Saluzzo's versions circulated alongside heavier Savoyard and Milanese issues in the Alpine piedmont markets.
