| Reverse description | The reverse displays a quatrefoil ornamental device at centre, formed by four interlocking rounded lobes arranged symmetrically within the coin's circular field, a decorative motif associated with the civic iconography of Perugia. Surrounding the central device is a circular legend reading S HERCVLANVS, referring to Saint Herculanus, patron and martyred bishop of Perugia, separated by star-shaped ornaments. The inscription is rendered in bold Roman capitals consistent with the hammered coinage of the Papal States in the early sixteenth century. The flan is irregular, and the strike is somewhat off-centre, as is typical of contemporary hand-struck minor silver issues. |
