Additional information

Antonio Venier's doge ate ruled Venice through the War of Chioggia's immediate aftermath, a conflict that had nearly destroyed the Republic entirely. Genoa's forces had occupied Chioggia at the lagoon's edge in 1379, and the subsequent peace of Turin in 1381 cost Venice dearly in trade concessions. The soldino was the workhorse of Venetian small commerce throughout this recovery period, circulating aggressively through the Adriatic markets Venice was scrambling to reclaim.

The star placed behind on this variety distinguishes it from otherwise identical dies of the type — a small mint mark difference that has allowed numismatists to sequence production across the eighteen-year reign.
