The Vicús culture flourished in the Piura region of northern Peru roughly between 300 BCE and 500 CE, largely contemporaneous with — and almost certainly in contact with — the better-documented Moche to their south. Their ceramic tradition is technically distinct: vessels frequently depict human figures in scenes that archaeologists still debate as ritual, funerary, or narrative. Peruvian numismatic commemoratives have long drawn from pre-Columbian material culture, and the Central Reserve Bank has issued similar cultural series across several decades, using circulating bimetallic denominations as the delivery mechanism for heritage programming.
