María Parado de Bellido was a mestiza woman from Huamanga executed by royalist forces in 1822 after refusing to reveal the location of her son, a patriot guerrilla fighter. She said nothing under torture and was shot by firing squad. Peru issued this coin as part of its ongoing commemorative circulation series marking the bicentennial of independence — a program that ran across several denominations and inserted historical figures into everyday pocket change.
